Projects > The Face Project | Emily Watson 2011-2012

While the expression of certain emotions is beyond our control, others can be controlled through socialization and training. Actors are one group who are able to voluntarily control and communicate a full range of emotions. At their best, they make viewers wonder whether they truly feel what they render visible; whether they display authentic emotions or perform a repertoire of acquired gestures; or whether in fact expressiveness and theatricality, emotion and display, join into one. As we watch their appearance on screen, we are compelled to explore our own desires and histories of mimicry.
