Gina Alvarez and I made these prints together at Pyramid Atlantic. They started with a child’s notebook made by a distant relative of Gina’s in the 1940’s. We appropriated the titles of his poems and worked backward from there. The visual language combines our own photographs, appropriated images, and shapes and colors drawn from Japanese cloud forms and Indian miniatures in the Sackler Museum in Washington D.C.. They were made by laying down digital grounds, applying simple printmaking techniques, and finally, working back into them with hand-work; including drawing, stitching, and collage.
